CloudAware
A System Software Infrastructure for Mobile Cloud Computing
Abstract
During the last years, the use of mobile devices has changed dramatically. For instance, todays smartphone users expect to have full access to their own data (irrespective of, e.g., time and space restrictions) and expect to be able to use almost every kind of application on their mobile device. However, despite constant and significant evolution, mobile devices are still and will always be limited in terms of computational power, storage, bandwidth and energy. Mobile cloud computing tries to face these restrictions by providing cloud resources to mobile devices.
This project aims to align existing concepts of distributed systems to the domain of mobile cloud computing. As mobile environments often face the obstacles of a quickly changing context, proven solutions for distributed systems cannot be employed right away. Specifically, this research addresses the enhancement of the so-called offloading-decision in mobile environments. In this project, concepts for context-adaptive application architectures are proposed in order to allow mobile devices to benefit from available cloud resources. In addition, a corresponding middleware is developed in order to evaluate these concepts.
CloudAware focuses on context adaptation, which is the consideration of not only current, but also future context states by forecasting them through learning from context information, acquired through the various physical and logical sensors of mobile devices. Through this research, it is also intended to provide common app-developers with the ability to benefit from opportunistic resource sharing with an almost hands-free approach.
