The joint working group VSIS is part of the department’s focus „Complex Systems Engineering“ (CSE) and includes two sub-groups, each independently researching and teaching different but thematically related topics. The „Distributed Systems“ (VSYS) group is headed by Prof. Dr. Winfried Lamersdorf, the „Databases and Information Systems“ (DBIS) group is headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Norbert Ritter.
In the domain of „Distributed Systems“ conceptual design, prototype implementation as well as use and application of system software to support open distributed applications are mainly considered. The group of „Databases and Information Systems“ is primarily engaged in concepts for modeling, architectures and implementations of data management in complex software systems and applications. As the complexity of current applications of both working groups is essentially determined by problems of heterogeneity, distribution and complexity, both fields complement one another and overlap thematically.
Exemplary collaborative fields of work are current system technologies, such as Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Web Services as well as cloud computing. This includes dealing with various forms of (distributed business) processes (workflows) and various aspects of Cloud and Grid Computing on the basis of increasingly powerful and more widespread information and communication technologies such as the internet.
