Abstract | This paper presents results of an extensive long-term clickstream study of Web browser usage. An update is given for findings of previous studies from seven to thirteen years ago. Web browsers now serve as unifying interface for a multitude of purposes; the users' tasks and visited sites determine specific interaction patterns and suggest improved corresponding forms of navigation support. We especially focus on character and challenges of page revisitation and suggest a more differentiated notion of the term page revisit. The recurrence rate, commonly used as a key measure for the share of page revisits, turns out to be strongly dependent on interpretation. Although the average recurrence rate of this study is lower than in previous studies, new and higher demands on revisitation support have emerged. Based on our analysis of user action logs and interview results, short-term revisits (backtrack or undo) are differentiated from medium-term (re-utilize or observe) and long-term revisits (rediscover). We analyze current problems and provide suggestions for the tailored support for different revisitation types. |
