Setting

The conference TrEC'98 is located in the heart of Hamburg in northern Germany. Hamburg has many faces: it is a center of trade and industry, a port city, a media metropolis, a university city, a center of arts, a shopping paradise and a leisure capital. Hamburg is Germany's second biggest city (following Berlin), with a population of 1.7 million.
And that is not all. Hamburg is also Germany's media capital with a strong presence of the magazine and newspaper press, TV, radio, new media, PR and advertising. Already in Medieval Age, Hamburg was a dominant commercial center in the heart of Europe. Therefore, the coincidence of a trade history with modern Internet-based media businesses predestines this city as the setting for a conference that emphasizes electronic commerce.

The city also maintains and cultivates its prominent position in the arts, with a wide range of theaters, the State Opera House, museums and art galleries offering a constantly changing program of international standing. The leisure facilities in and around the city are exceptional, deriving much of their character from lake and riverside views of the Elbe and Alster (with more bridges in Hamburg than in Venice!).

The conference venue is located just on the backside of the renaissance-style city hall ('Rathaus') in midst of the ancient city center with old hanseatic brick buildings. Weather conditions in this time of the year are usually quite pleasant with temperatures ranging from 15 to 25 degrees (centigrade) during the day and 10 to 20 at night. Chances of sunny weather and of some showers are both ... good.

The conference is located in the 'Chamber of Commerce' (Handelskammer, Adolphsplatz 1) on the backside of the city hall. In modern conference rooms in an ancient ambiance the conference takes place in a setting well suited for such an event: In the same building, only a few steps away, the Chamber of Commerce also hosts the hamburg stock exchange.
